Let’s be real here…going to school isn’t what it used to be for today’s youth. From cancel culture to school shootings, getting an education is like getting put into a warzone filled with nothing but negativity and more negativity.

One of the biggest issues that comes about is the safety in our nation’s schools. The fact of the matter is that today’s youth is lacking the understanding that actions have consequences is a major problem fueled by the rise of social media and the rise in school violence.

When I first heard that Sherriff Mike Chitwood of Volusia County, Florida was going to take action against those who make threats against schools, the first thought that came into my mind was that it was about time something needed to be done. In some cases, the threats are often just as deadly as the actual situation because it instills fear and discourages students from learning and from teachers making their living.

In Sherriff Chitwood’s press conference, he angrily explained that there were 54 threats made against schools in his county and a majority of them turned out to be bogus and false. Looking at this from the perspective of a former special education student, I often can see the frustration on the faces of all authority figures across this country.

For some students, going to school is like going to a job: you go in, you punch in, you do your business, and you go home. The last thing anyone wants is disruptions to the students’ routine and this is often demonstrated by closing the schools because some students think it’s funny to make threats for their own amusement.

In my day, if you make a false claim or statement for your own amusement, you get punished for an extended period of time. Back then, parents had more of a backbone whereas a majority of today’s parents have no backbone. The trouble is that some families have no backbone to the point that they don’t care if their children is making threats in schools.

The fact is that we as a society need to set expectations for our children to not be given something that they can use for their own amusement. Among those expectations are setting a certain age for them to get a cell phone as an example. I’ve said it time after time that social media has been a huge part of why today’s students are struggling. Parents will often bow to the demands of the child to give them a cell phone or allow them to have social media.

When Sherriff Chitwood said that he was going to start raising today’s generation by perp walking and shaming students along with their parents, I took a look and said to myself that Sherriff Chitwood is doing something that should have been done a long time ago which is ensuring that today’s generation is raised properly.

Perhaps maybe it’s time to bring back the belt, take out the paddle and just send a message that punishments such as grounding isn’t going to do it.

As hard as it is, today’s parents need to show their children the importance of doing the right things in life and not doing something stupid because what Sherriff Chitwood is doing is a warning of what will happen when nothing is done. I commend Sherriff Chitwood for taking the necessary steps to protecting students and setting an example for the troublemakers.

Catch you all later!!
