Blog #370: How Meghan Gill from “Hell’s Kitchen” Season 14 Demonstrates How We Can

Back in the day, I was a huge fan of the FOX reality series, “Hell’s Kitchen” and it was a competition about chefs with various personalities using their cooking skills to win a position in one of Chef Gordon Ramsay’s many restaurants or other independently owned restaruants. And while, I will say that the show has gone downhill after Season 7 (with Seasons 10, 11 and 12 being the worst), there was one season in particular that caught my attention and especially the chef who that season because she demonstrates just how far we can tolerate as a human being.

I’m of course talking about Hell’s Kitchen Season 14 and it’s winner, Meghan Gill of Roanoke, Virginia (where my sister also lives near). Now, when it comes to Meghan Gill, she represents more than someone who can really cook and thrive under pressure. One of the storylines of Hell’s Kitchen Season 14 is her ability to not tolerate as much as she should take in. Let’s face it, Meghan didn’t take losing well and her breaking point came in Episode 6, where she took her teammates to the backroom and threatened to nominate herself because she was so frustrated. I mean, how would you feel if you were always on the losing end of things and you just had to tolerate it?

Well, Chef Ramsay himself saw her frustration and after being reported about Meghan’s frustration from the Red Team’s Sous Chef Andi Van Willigan, he pulled her into the storeroom where he could see her true potential as a rising leader, but also warned her to not tolerate as much.

In a way, I can sympathize deeply with Chef Meghan on account that I do tolerate as much and there have been times where I just want to walk out of something. Lately, I have been tolerating so much that I shouldn’t be tolerating and I have to remind myself that I don’t need to carry deadweight in my life.

Being a neurodivergent individual, I sometimes can’t really process what is right and what is wrong and I get the belief that I should just take things as they go. Part of the problem is that maybe I am too nice of a guy when I really should be tough on others if need be. Yes, I get “Hell’s Kitchen” is a competition and it’s now bad for my mental health, but there are some good things about it and Meghan is one of them. However, in her case, Meghan was ready to go with her guns blazing and it only took her natural development throughout the season to get her to winning the competition.

But we all have breaking points and after seeing Meghan’s breakdown in Episode 6, I knew that I found someone that I can relate to in the workplace because at my day job, I am kind of like Meghan in terms of someone who doesn’t have to take so much at once and that I do have a breaking point just as much as she does. Like Meghan, I have to work with deadweight and answer to exacting bosses and managers and it’s frustrating. Still, I’m proud of the fact that she won Hell’s Kitchen demonstrating not just natrual leadership, but also as someone who is not afraid to say that they can’t tolerate everything anymore, including incompetent teammates.

Catch you all later!!
