It is no surprise to me that the educational system that helped me become the first neurodivergent student in Seekonk Public School to complete a full education without coming from other towns or school districts has some issues…really bad issues.
…
I am of course talking about how today’s generation of students are being misled in the wrong direction into believing that the things that are supposed to be learning about are politically incorrect. However, when it comes to something like school vouchers, then those vouchers are like golden tickets. You can only use them for the areas and fields that need it the most. This can range from student support, to building improvements, to district wide matters.
Clearly, the public school system in Florida did not get the message. Think of the Florida School System as like a contestant on Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell Kitchen,” who right from the get-go is in continued hot water with the famous chef. Every time they say that they are going to do something to get better, they end up getting worse. This latest educational blunder sends a pretty convincing message that students are not getting the support and guidance that they need.
I mean, offering school vouchers for something like a trip to Disney World, kayaks and televisions is completely ludicrous and a slap in the face to those that really want or need those vouchers to go into something more important.
…
As a former special education, I feel that public schools should do better than what Florida is doing right now. You don’t offer vouchers for something that families should book on their own. You don’t offer vouchers for kayaks or television’s when you can just go buy them at the store.
In the article where this topic came from, the head of the Florida Policy Institute says that it isn’t fair to students and especially teachers, who could use the vouchers to go towards an educational experience and not something that you can purchase on your own.

Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School in Seekonk, MA
To me, I feel that special education students who are in Florida Public Schools deserve the support of the vouchers as much as General Education students. It’s like that when you are in an educational environment, you are in that environment to learn and if you are planning to go on a trip to say Disney World, then you either fundraise or save money yourself.
Case in point?
For the past several years, the Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School in Seekonk, MA has done 8th grade trips to Philadelphia, PA, Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD that take place in the spring. During the course of the year, they have the students do fundraising ranging from selling wreaths during the holidays to doing bake sales, etc. What’s more is that the students are learning not just money skills, but also teamwork and goal setting that they will have in the real world at the end of the day.

I mean, what is the purpose of using a voucher in the first place when it teaches nothing to the students and doesn’t provide the teachers with the funding they so need? By offering vouchers, Florida Public Schools are letting down the students and teachers that make up what makes the Florida Public School System what it is. So, let me say to the Florida School System to stop offering vouchers and let the students learn that nothing is handed to you on a silver platter. You have to earn knowledge that you will one day take into the real world and this is not how to do it.
