This week, I got called into the office at my day job and I was asked who keeps moving the trash can around at the front entrance? I tell them that it would most likely be me and could be also one of my fellow porters. But, without any reason or backing, they assumed I did it because I was “very meticulous” in my action. The manager then proceeded to draw on a piece of paper how the front entrance is supposed to look.

I bring this up because there is a strong lesson for all of us to learn and be aware of as we enter the workforce or are already experiencing in the workforce. There are going to be some managers and businesses out there that are going to be worrying about the smallest, minute details that would otherwise not be as important. Just because you may not worry or care about something insignificant, your boss or supervisor will.
However, when I was being read the riot act, I stood my ground because it was insignificant to me. I mean, who worries about the trash can being moved out of place? In my mind, there are far more important things to worry about in life such as being there for my audience and my followers at “Going the Distance.”

Now there is another factor that comes into play here…that individuals on the autism spectrum or anyone with a mental disorder will worry about small insignificant details to the point that it will become bothersome and distracting to others. This is most likely on account that we tend to fear the worst in the workplace only to discover that the higher up doesn’t end up taking notice of it.

The important thing to discuss in this matter is that if you are called out for something insignificant, it’s on account that there is nothing wrong with you, it’s the individual who calls you out for it that has something wrong with them. In my case, I did my job and the only thing that matters that I go in, do my job and get out. I stay in my lane because that is what I do and I can’t save everyone because not everyone is worth saving including those who freak out over insignificant things such as a misaligned trash can.
