Blog #336: My Views on the Situation with a Teacher Under Investigation for Showing Disney’s &

Tell me what is wrong with this picture…a teacher in Brooksville, Florida has been suspended pending an investigation after she showed her students the Disney Film, “Strange World” because the main character is gay.

I’m pretty sure every one of us has had Disney in the classroom and never have we ever experienced anything like this. Yes, I do see that are we in a society where everyone is sensitive to the point where they call things so silly out, it’s almost unthinkable. This, of course, is another example of why we need to learn from things rather than run from them.

If you recall a couple of blogs back, I talked about why schools need to show “Song of the South” and then discuss why the movie is controversial. Now, there is nothing wrong with having a character who is in love with someone of the same sex.

In fact, we are seeing more and more of that in our society and everyone in that community is being called out just because of who they are. I think movies like “Strange World” can teach children about being around people who are different (orientation, religion, beliefs, etc.) because if we continue to hide our students and our children under a rock, then they will never learn.

To say that students are being “indoctrinated,” is not true. The only indoctrinating is how those in society are spreading their own lies into the minds of others. Disney is for everyone and if teachers or schools want to show anything that might otherwise turn people off, then just have the student sign a permission slip. I understand the teacher in this case did that and yet, she is still getting flack for showing “Strange World” in the first place.

Goes to show you that we are doing more harm than good for students by bringing the trombones into the school system. Education is meant to be diverse, equal and inclusive and this does not reflect that.

Catch you all later!!
