Let’s face it…in life, we play to win the game. In the NFL or any other major sports league, sometimes we let down our guard that we are portrayed as a gladiator fighting for survival. But on Sunday night, sometimes the human side of things is overshadowed by the business side of things.
The Cincinnati Bengals were just one quarter away from sending the AFC Championship Game to Overtime for the second straight year, but a costly roughing penalty gave the Kansas City Chiefs the opportunity to win with a field goal.

Naturally, it was a bitter pill for the Bengals to take and Defensive Tackle Germaine Pratt took his anger out on the guy that caused the penalty, Linebacker Joseph Ossai. Now, let’s look at the moment for a second, Joseph Ossai was doing his job to try and play defense. But, he just made a mistake that cost his team a chance to go to the Super Bowl in two weeks.
Yes, everyone makes mistakes. It’s a fact of life, but it’s how we view those mistakes and how we react to them that can make all the difference in the world.

Sunday’s AFC Championship Game serves as an example of what happens when we don’t have self-control. The fact that Germaine Pratt was clouded in the emotion is one thing, but the truth of the matter is we cannot allow our emotions to get the better of us…which is what happened here.

When it comes to self-control, its really up to us to decide how we behave in the moment. Lack of self-control happens not just in sports, but also in the workplace, the classroom and in our personal lives as well. Sometimes, our lack of self-control can destroy connections and friendships which is something that I myself have had to face because my self-control was lacking.
If you have seen some of my past blogs, you know that I use “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” as an example of what happens when we end up changing from the person we are supposed to be into the person we don’t want to be. I’m pretty sure many of us have become Mr. Hyde when we wanted to be Dr. Jekyll. Everyone who was on the field in Philadelphia and Kansas City on Sunday was Dr. Jekyll and some turned into Mr. Hyde. Germaine Pratt entered Kansas City as Dr. Jekyll and in the end, he turned into Mr. Hyde in front of Joseph Ossai.

Some may view a lack of self-control as something that are born with. But, the truth of the matter is, everyone has self-control and that is an excuse that people often hear about. Neurodiverse individuals struggle mightly with self-control and what happened Sunday night was how a neurodiverse individual would react if something that they didn’t like had happened in front of them.
If we have lack of self-control in the workplace, we face consequences that involve disciplinary action and/or termination. If we have lack of self-control in education, we face consequences that involve detention or even suspension.

In school, perhaps a solution would be for parents of special education students that lack self-control would be to put in the child’s IEP that he or she struggles with lack of self-control around others and that the child should be pulled aside for a form of self-regulation or therapy within the school. A neurodiverse child who struggles with self-control in social situations sometimes may need extra social support in order to better themselves.

In the case of Germaine Pratt, I shouldn’t say he needs to be released by the Bengals for the lack of self-control he had towards Joseph Ossai. It was the heat of moment, but even that is not an excuse for such lack of self-control. The NFL, like any other major sport out there is a business and clearly this was not self-control in the workplace (in this case, the football field). If I do have to say one thing to Germaine is that view this as a learning experience. It sucks, but that’s how life works.
If I say one thing to Joseph Ossai is that what you did was an honest mistake and that you have nothing to be ashamed of. Take this as a learning experience as well and you will be a better player in the National Football League. There will be plenty of times to achieve the goals that lie in front of you. Never give up!!
