As you know, running a business/mission like “Going the Distance” takes a lot of time and effort. Day after day, my energy goes towards ensuring that my mission is carried out to benefit individuals and families affected by autism/neurodiversity.

When it comes to having energy, there is a balance that many of us tend to overlook: not using your energy wisely. There have been plenty of instances where I have not used my energy wisely and I have resulted in paying the consequences. Using energy is like using gasoline or jet fuel, you gotta use it wisely.
This is reflected when it came to recent events like cold calling on speaking gigs or finding a new day job that I have been doing for the past year. These are energy draining moments that could have been put through to something else that was otherwise positive for the business/mission as a whole.

As this blog is being written, there are plenty of neurodiverse individuals and even neurotypical individuals that don’t use their energy wisely whether it’s in the workplace, in the schools or even in the home family life.
I see this a lot in the workplace, when it comes to supervisors, managers and even employees who would much rather use their energy on something else that is not related to what they are supposed to do. What’s more, and this is unfortunate in business, is that managers, employees and supervisors pour their energy into something and that the higher ups don’t seem appreciative of that energy.
That right there, is wasted energy. The truth of the matter is, is that any energy that is to be used should be to energies that are beneficial to the individual.
If people aren’t going to be appreciative of your energies, then don’t show that energy to them. Unfortunately, a lot of neurodiverse individuals are people pleasers, myself included. I strive to please people to the best of my ability which includes putting on a mask and going out of my way for someone that will not show an appreciation in return.
In conclusion, it’s a hard fact that I sometimes have to face that I am not going to please everyone with my used energy. What happens, happens and we can’t turn back the clock to change it. When that happens, you can use your energy to either beat yourself up over it or use that energy to try again on completing your goal.
An example would be in the song “Garden Party” by Ricky Nelson. Using that energy can’t always please everyone, so you have to recharge that energy and focus on your own mental health state.
