Well, for the second time in as many weeks, it happened again.
…
I was once again the victim of a scammer/pirate and this time around, the damage was much worser than it should have been. You see, being a self-advocate and public speaker in the community involves being involved in many organizations such as the Global Autism Project as an example.
Last Wednesday, I had gotten a “text” from them about getting 3 $200 gift cards from Amazon.com and after two hours of frustration, I find out that GAP did not have any desire for such a request and I ended up being pirated. Fortunately, my money was saved from these pirates, but unfortunately, I lost my debit card for the second time and this time around, I ended up having a small panic attack.
…
It further empathizes that these pirates/scammers are people that have nothing better to do with their miserable lives. As a neurodiverse individual, what happened on Wednesday was a complete waste of my time and mental health. The truth of the matter is that these pirates targeted Global Autism Project as part of their elaborate scheme and I was one of several people who took the bait.
Now, being a non-profit organization or any organization for that matter requires being extra vigilant from these kinds of people. Now, given the fact that I could have lost all my hard earned money was a thought that I thought could never happen. In recent years, we have seen a strong increase in pirate attacks and it’s only going to get worse.
Furthermore, this further clarifies that neurodiverse/disabled individuals are prone to these kinds of attacks and some may be in denial thinking that it will never happen to them. There are pirates out there, but they are not the pirates we thought of from our youth.
