Well, it’s happened again.
Another school shooting has taken place and it was at an elementary school…AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL of all places.
…
Yes, you may be wondering just when we are going to do something about all these shootings that are going on in our country right now, especially those that take place in somewhere like an elementary school. All I know is that action does need to be taken in an area that above my place as an advocate.
Now, as a former special education student, I take these school shootings on a personal level because to me, going to school was having a routine, being around people that you knew and making a difference in the community.
Some of you may say that I shouldn’t be so concerned about school shootings because it doesn’t concern me. Well, let me tell you that it does concern me greatly! Whenever these shootings happen, I often try to put myself in the shoes of those experiencing the shooting firsthand, how they are feeling, what is going through their minds.

When I was in school, we didn’t practice lockdown drills yearly. The only time I remember doing lockdown drills was in 6th grade, 7th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade. Now, schools practice lockdown drills yearly and while I agree we need to be prepared for the unexpected, there is a mental health side to the situation.
Students, especially those on the autism spectrum like myself, need to have these drills be taken one step at a time such as getting advanced notice of when the drill is happening, coping tools, etc. I get the fact that when the real thing happens, things won’t be taken one step at a time. But this is why my presentation “School Safety Drills and Autism” exists on account that school safety drills of all kinds are indeed very bothersome to neurodiverse and special education students.
Some may view this as a way of getting students out of doing the drills, but that’s not true! It’s purpose is to take some of the edge off and nothing more.

What happened in Texas this week is unforgivable and is something that needs to stop right now. This is especially true as my oldest niece in Virginia will be starting her educational journey in the fall and this is all going on.
Parents and Guardians should not be worrying about not seeing their children come home because some idiot causes a place of death in a place you’d at least expect it to happen, especially Special Education students.
Yes, we have to be prepared for the unexpected whether it would be in a school, supermarket or community event, but when is enough going to be enough? You tell me because I am getting sick and tired of hearing about shootings and other forms of violence going on in our world.

Catch you all later and may God bless the victims of all shootings, not just school shootings!!
