Me and my mom after receiving our ashes on Ash Wednesday 2022
Yesterday marked the beginning of a period of time for Baptists, Protestants, Presbyterians, Catholics and Christians like me to make a sacrifice in us to strengthen our faith. This period is called Lent and it all begins on Ash Wednesday where we receive ashes on our foreheads and told to repent and believe in the gospel and it all concludes on Easter Sunday where our Lord and Master rises from the dead in triumph over evil.
…
Yet, for neurodiverse individuals who are Baptist, Protestant, Presbyterian, Catholic or Christian, Lent can be a difficult period of time because we have to sacrifice something for 40 days and nights until Easter Sunday (either in late March or April). We neurodiverse individuals thrive on a specific routine whether its something we eat, a place we go to or an activity we enjoy doing that takes up a lot of our time.
I can say that while Lent isn’t hard for me, it is very hard for some neurodiverse people and when it comes to giving up something until Easter, it can be agonizing.
…
However, if we want to prepare neurodiverse individuals to give up something for Lent, its important to take things one step at a time. A good suggestion is that in the days leading up to Lent, talk to your local reverend or priest and explain to them that your neurodiverse loved one either has difficulty deciding what to sacrifice for Lent or doesn’t want to take part in it at all.
A solution would be that the individual can be brought to the reverend/priest and he or she can help the individual go through what activities or routines that he or she does. It also helps to make a list of what the individual does and then rank what activities are of importance to activities that are of least importance.
Then, after making the list, a decision can be reached on what activities are sacrificed and which ones are not. It also helps for the individual to sort of buddy up with another neurodiverse individual who is going through the same problem. That way, the individual is building a bridge with the other individual and as a result, a friendship could possibly be formed.

Now, while giving up something for Lent may be difficult, it can also help build a person’s self-control that is a part of a person’s mindset. Some people can view lent as a life changing experience because when we give up something that causing us to have a lack of self-control, we can become better people as a result.
Trust me, there were certain activities I wish I could have given up for Lent that were harmful to me on a social and personal level, but that’s how we learn with something like Lent that not only strengthens us with the higher power, but also makes us better people in the long run.
