Blog #173: My thoughts on the Brian Flores situation

If you recall a few blogs back, I talked about why the NFL needs to be more diverse when it comes to hiring head coaches of different backgrounds in order to promote more Diversity, Equality and Inclusion.

Well, it seems like the NFL still has not gotten the message and as a result, they are dealing with the consequences of their actions in the form of ex-Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who as a result of this situation, has filed a lawsuit against the NFL, the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants.

Now, I want to be very clear about something: I do not and will never tolerate any type of discrimination against anyone regardless of race, disability, background, etc. in any way whatsoever. If I had one thing to say to the National Football League and especially to the Miami Dolphins, it would be shame on you.

As of right now, there is only one NFL head coach of color and that is Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin. It’s not good enough and it sends a negative message to both player and fan who follows the game. What the NFL is doing is wrong and needs to be all other organizations that promote DEI.

One thing I would like to see is Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy land a head coaching job at some point. He’s got the capability to lead a team and yet, no one has taken a chance on him.

And it’s important to remember that what if this was someone who was not only of color, but what if this was someone who had a disability or who is neurodiverse? How do you think they would feel if they were being discriminated in this way? The fact of the matter is that this kind of practice should not be happening in the first place, yet it is happening.

Brian Flores deserves a chance at a head coaching job in the NFL and it would send a message that the NFL can be more accepting of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion in more ways than one.

The same holds true for promising candidates like Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bienemy or Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles, who has previously been a head coach in the past.

In the years to come, I would like to see the NFL and all the other major sports leagues hire not just those of color or gender to various leadership roles, but also those who are disabled or neurodiverse. Until that day comes, we are going to see more of these workplace type situations happen and it’s going to be bad vibes for both company and customer.

Remember DEI is something to be embraced, not shunned!!

Catch you all later!!
