As we continue to slowly adapt to the new normal of having COVID becoming an endemic, I wanted to share something that can be an ideal job for those who are capable while disabled and looking for work. I am, of course, talking about being COVID testing administrators or rather, just collecting the samples of those who test for the virus.
…
Now, being a COVID test administrator is more than just sticking a swab up someone’s nose or throat. There is a method that individuals need to learn where using a swab and collecting a sample is more of an art as well as a science.
When I say that its more of an art as well as a science, COVID test administrating involves care and understanding. If there is one trait that neurodiverse and disabled individuals can have even before training is the sense of empathy towards others. Many naysayers say that neurodiverse and disabled individuals do not show empathy towards others.
This is not true as we do show empathy and our empathy can range in our emotions from social situations to being on the job.

The Quarantine Scene in “ET: The Extra Terrestrial” (1982) can be traumatizing to some individuals due to the protective gear worn by the astronauts.
Now the one challenge that neruodiverse and disabled individuals could struggle with when it comes to being an administrator is that you have to wear uncomfortable protective gear such as a mask and a hazmat suit. A lot of individuals can have sensory reactions to such protective measures, but most testing locations do have you just wear a mask and protective latex gloves.
As long as you are not allergic to latex and are willing to wear the protective gear, it’s a small price to pay towards the next step in making a living.
…
Going back to the topic of empathy, just because you wear protective gear and have the ability to work on someone in collecting samples from them, it doesn’t make you high and mighty. I strongly implore and beseech that you go in as a normal minded individual and not become a Covid test administrator to make lives of those you work with miserable.
Remember, no matter whether we make friends or enemies, we are all human and COVID does not discriminate as we all well know by now. You also have to abide by a set of rules, guidelines and standards that the employer enforces like any other business or company.

If you are seeking work as a COVID test administrator, you can find jobs at major pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens or Rite Aid as a few examples. If you are interested and want to learn more, talk to your job coach or advisor and see if this is a good fit for you. Lastly, COVID may be turning into an endemic, but it should be treated no differently than any other illness, so don’t go into the job thinking you are just going to be helping other battling COVID.
Be open minded to learning about helping others in fighting other illnesses because remember, flexibility is a survival skill, not just a necessity.

Catch you all later!!
